Sporting Injuries Bentleigh

With all acute injuries (injuries that have just recently occurred) there are many things happening at a cellular level in the involved tissue which leads to swelling of the injured area. The most important thing to do immediately after an acute injury is to follow the RICE first aid principal:

  • Rest: avoiding as much activity on the affected limb as possible, avoiding activities that make the pain worse.
  • Ice: every 2 hours for no longer than 20 minutes and no less than 10 minutes at a time.
  • Compression: where possible compress the area to decrease swelling
  • Elevation:  where possible elevate the injured area to help decrease swelling

After 48 hours it is essential to see a health professional to help assists in a fast recovery. During inflammation the body produces cells called ‘macrophages’ to help get rid of the toxins released from the injured tissue. Deep tissue massage helps promote the movement of these macrophages into the injured site as well as bringing antibacterial and anti-inflammatory cells to the area to aid in tissue healing. When tissue is injured it promotes collagen deposits, which don’t stretch like muscles do.

As well as using specialised soft tissue treatment to treat injured muscles, Clinical Myotherapists will give specific exercises to aid in lengthening the scar tissue to minimize unhealthy formation and to aid in proper alignment of scar tissue. Once the acute phase has passed, our experienced Clinical Myotherapists will help address physical factors that may have pre-disposed to the injury in the first place, such as poor postures, inflexible muscles or poor sporting technique.
