Frozen Shoulder – Adhesive Capsulitis Bentleigh

frozen shoulder

Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) is a painful and debilitating condition typically characterized by pain and stiffness in the shoulder joint. There is a considerable reduction in one’s active range of movement through the shoulder joint especially on abduction (moving your arm out to the side of your body) and rotation (twisting your shoulder in positions like putting your hand behind your back). There are four main stages that develop over a number of months for a true capsulitis, that involves gradual adhesion (tightening) of the gleno-humeral joint (GHJ) – the shoulder joint, , inflammation of GHJ tendons and muscles (presenting as pain), decreased movement of the GHJ,  muscle atrophy, shoulder stiffness and referred pain down the arm. Patients can also experience pain symptoms during the night.

The bones, ligaments and tendons that make up your shoulder joint, are encased in a capsule of connective tissue. When this capsule thickens and tightens around the shoulder joint, this is what is termed as ‘frozen shoulder’. Sometimes there is no specific cause for frozen shoulder however it can arise after prolonged periods of shoulder immobilization (such as after surgery or after minor or major injuries). Typically frozen shoulder affects those ages between 40-60 years and generally females more than males.

Clinical Myotherapy has been very beneficial for those suffering from frozen shoulder. In a treatment session we will aim to release the muscle contracture around the shoulder joint to help improve your active range of movement and decrease your pain. Modalities such as myofascial release, dry needling, electro dry needling, shoulder mobilization and corrective exercises when used in combination have shown to be very effective when treating and managing frozen shoulder.
